Gariwerd (a.k.a Grampians)

I offer my respects to Aboriginal Elders of past and present and acknowledge that this land, the land I stood on to produce these photographs belongs to that of the Jardwadjali & Djab Wurrung people, that they, are the traditional owners of the land that is still being occupied as of today.

In January 2016, I took a trip to Gariwerd despite the 40 degree weather that is characteristic of summer in Victoria. What is presented below is a collection of photographs as well as some audio clips of the environment I recorded as I spent two days out in Gariwerd.

For the best experience, please use headphones and adjust the volume to a low level before increasing it to a comfortable level.

Lots of form but alas, very little function. I would like to think that this journey up has given it some depth and complexity where, before, there was none.

Reflections

I tried to do what I do best, instill a part of who I am and what I was feeling at that time into my photographic creations. It works when I am being an observer of people and events, that in exchange for creating something, I allow myself to exist in a 'raw' state. Nature however, resisted. It wasn't so much that I was unworthy but that Nature was indifferent to my presence and form. That its form 'was, is and always will be'. All that was left to do is to let that sense of wonder sink in and take away my own interpretations of what I've experienced and acknowledge that it would also be subjectively, one of a kind. Personal. Mine.
